FPGA to 16×2 LCD Interface (HD44780) Posted March 15, 2012 by Chris “This project shows the process of choosing parts, building a schematic, connecting the hardware and writing the hardware description (VHDL) to control a HD44780 LCD interface and output a few characters to the 16×2 LCD screen. Standard HD44780 LCDs are useful for creating standalone projects. We have a datasheet that has dimensions and pin-locations and then a HD44780 datasheet with the detailed commands for control. We have a generic 20x4 datasheet that has dimensions and pin-locations (the exact model may vary but the pinout, size and protocol information is the same). We also have a HD44780 datasheet with the ... I write bytes to HD44780 display DDRAM to display characters and it works weird on the second line. I use 16x2 model and I write "0123456789" string from address X on. According to the datasheet: In a 2-line display, the cursor moves to the second line when it passes the 40th digit of the first line. I found tutorial about connecting HD44780 display to Raspberry Pi. In this tutorial there is no contrast potentiometer. Vo is connected to ground. Tutorial author says: In order to control the contrast you can adjust the voltage presented to Pin 3. This must be between 0 and 5V. I tied this pin to ground. @user1472266 Well, the 5V pin on pi1, 2, 3 varies in how much current it can supply. The LCD uses ~25mA when backlit (and blank) on 5V. So it's safe to connect it to the FC-113 module, at least - I am unsure if the 16x2 LCD requires resistors on its pins without that module.
